Discuss the magnetic nature of molecules on the basis of molecular orbital theory.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The salient features of molecular orbital throry are as follows:
(i) The electrons of various molecules are pesent in molecular orbitals.
(ii) Molecular orbitals are formed by combination of atomic orbitals having comparable energies and symmetry.
(iii) Molecular orbitals are polycentric depending on the number of combining atomic orbitals.
(iv) the number of molecular orbitals is equal to the number of combining atomic orbitals. two atomic orbitals form two molecular orbitals, bonding and antibonding respectively.
(v) the bonding molecular orbital has more stability and less energy.
(vi) the molecular orbitals are filled according to the different rules, i.e., Aufbau principle, pauli.s exclusion principle and Hund.s rule.
