What is heat capacity at constant volume and at constant pressure ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know tht, q =C `Delta T`
Here, q = heat changes
At constant pressure, q = `Delta H`
and at constant volume, q = `Delta U`
`therefore` Heat capacity at constant volume is obtained by putting the value of (iii) in (i), we will have
`Delta U = C_(v) Delta T or C_(v) = ((Delta U)/(Delta T))_(v)`
Thusm heat capacity at constant volume is tha rate of change of internal energy with temperature. Similiarly, heat capacity at constant pressure is obtained by putting the value of q from (ii) to (i), we get
`Delta H = C_(p) Delta T or C_(p) = ((Delta H)/(Delta T))_(p)`
Heat capacity at constant pressure is the rate of change with respect to temperature.
