What is enthalpy of atomization ? Give an example.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Enthalpy of atomization is the change in ethalpy on breaking one mole of bonds completely into atoms in the gas phase.
For example, `H_(2) (g) to 2H (g), Delta_(s) H^("ϴ") = 435.0 kj mol^(-1)`. In chemical reactions, there is always formation and breaking of bonds. Energy is required to break a bond. and is released on formation of a bond. There are two different terms used in thermodynamics, related with enthalpy changes as given below : (i) Bond dissociation enthalpy (ii) Mean bond enthalpy
