When steam is passed over coke at 1270 K temperature, water gas `(CO + H_2)` is formed. Now again steam is passed over water-gas. It is heated in the presence of catalytic mixture (i.e., `Fe_2O_3` and `Cr_2O_3` ) at about 673 K temperature. Carbon monoxide gets oxidised to carbon dioxide.

This is known as "Water gas shift reaction".
