Explain why water has high boiling and melting points as compared to `H_2S`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In case of water, intermolecular hydrogen bonding takes place. So, large number of water molecules associate with each other. Therefore, large amount of energy is required to break the water molecules. Hence, water exists in liquid form, has high boiling point and melting point. Whereas in `H_2S` no hydrogen bonding takes place. Hence, `H_2S` exists as a gas and has low melting and boiling point.
