What do you understand by the term 'auto-protolysis' of water? what is its significance?

By auto protolysis we mean, self ionization of water. It is like
`H_2O(l) + H_2O (l) iff H_3O^+ + OH ^- (aq)`
Due to auto protolysis, water is amphoteric in nature i.e., it reacts with both acids and bases. It acts as a base towards acid stronger than itself and can act as an acid towards bases stronger than itself.
