Explanation

The restricted rotation of atoms or groups around the double bonded C-atom give rise to different geometries of such compounds. The stereoisomers of this type are called geometrical isomers. Isomers in which two identical atoms or groups lies on the same side of the double are called cis isomers. Isomers in which two identical atoms or groups lies on the opposite side are called trans isomers Cis and trans. isomers have same structure but different configuration. Necessary condition for showing cis-trans or geometrical isomerism is the presence of the identical (same) group/atom on doubly bonded C-atom.
