Differential extraction : In this method, organic compound is extracted from aqueous medium. It is separated by shaking it with an organic solvent. Organic compound is more soluble in organic solvent than in water. The organic solvent and aqueous solution should be immiscible forming two distinct layers. If organic compound is less soluble in organic solvent, very large quantity of solvent would be required. The technique of continous extraction is followed in such cases.
