How will you detect the presence of carbon and hydrogen in an organic compound ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

All organic compounds generally contain carbon and hydrogen. But for the detection of carbon and hydrogen in an organic compound, copper oxide-testis used. Copper oxide test : A little amount of dry and powdered compound is mixed with double amount of dry copper oxide. This mixture is heated in a hard glass tube. A delivery tube is attached to it and other end of delivery tube is dipped into another tube containing lime water. One bulb is present at the centre of delivery tube having anhydrous white copper sulphate. During heating, carbon gets oxidised to carbon dioxide. It turns lime water milky. Hydrogen present in the organic compound gets oxidised to water. It turns arihydrous white copper sulphate to blue. This confirms the detection of carbon and hydrogen.
