How will you detect the presence of carbon and hydrogen in an organic compound ?

Carbon and hydrogen in the organic compound can be estimated by Liebig.s method. In this method organic compound is heated with cupric (II) oxide and oxygen. The carbon and hydrogen of compound get oxidised to carbon dioxide and water.
`C + 2CuO to CO_2 + 2Cu`
`2H + CuO to H_2O + Cu`
Here, carbon dioxide produced is absorbed by potassiuin hydroxide, while water vapours are absorbed by calcium chloride taken separately in U-tubes.

These tubes are connected in parallel series. In U-tubes, `CO_2` and `H_2O` formation take place. The amount of carbon and hydrogen can be determined from the `CO_2` and `H_2O`. If the mass of organic compound be mg, and mass of `H_2O` and `CO_2` be `m_1` and `m_2g` respectively. Then,
Percentage of carbon `= (12 xx m_2 xx 100)/(44 xx m)` % : Percentage of hydrogen = `(2 xx m_1 xx 100)/(18 xx m)%`
