Discuss Dumas method for estimation of nitrogen in an organic compound.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Dumas method : In this method, given organic compound is heated with copper oxide in the presence of `CO_2`. The carbon and hydrogen are oxidised to carbon dioxide and water. The nitrogen present in the compound remains free. The gaseous mixture is collected over an aqueous solution of KOH. Nitrogen is collected in the upper part of the tube.

Determination of % age of Nitrogen
Let the mass of organic compound = mg
Volume of nitrogen = `V_1 ml`
Room Temperature = `T_1 K`
Volume of nitrogen at `STP = (p_1V_1 xx 273)/(760 xx T_1)`
Here
P = Atmospheric pressure - Aqueous tension `22400 mL N_2` at STP weighs 28g.
`V ml N_2 ` at `STP = (28 xx V)/(22400 ) g` , Percentage of nitrogen = `(28 xx V xx 100)/(22400 xx m)%`
