In this method, given organic compound is heated with concentrated sulphuric acid. The compound containing nitrogen changes into ammonium sulphate. Now ammonium sulphate is heated with excess of sodium hydroxide. It liberates ammonia gas. The liberated ammonia gas is passed into a . standard solution (known volume) of acid (conc. `H_2SO_4` or `HCl`). The acid left unused is estimated by titrating it with known volume of alkali. From the amount of acid left unused after the reaction, amount of acid used for neutralisation of ammonia can be calculated. The chemical reaction takes place during the process is as follows :
Organic compound +.Conc. `H_2SO_4 to (NH_4)_2SO_4`
`(NH_4)_2SO_4 +2NaOH to Na_2SO_4 + 2NH_3 + 2H_2O `
`2NH_3 + H_2SO_4 + (NH_4) SO_4`
Solutions :
Let the mass of organic compound = mg
Volume of `H_2SO_4` taken = V mL
Volume of NaOH taken for titration
of excess of `H_2SO_4= V ml `
`V_1mL` of `NaOH `of molarity `M = (V_1)/2 mL` of `H_2SO_4` of molarity M.
Volume of unused `H_2SO_4 = (V - (V_1)/2) mL`
`(V - (V_1)/2)mL` of `H_2SO_4 = 2 (V - (V_1)/(2))mL` of `NH_3` Solution
1000 mL of IM NH, solution contains 17g of `NH_3` or 14g of N.
`2(V - (V_1)/2)mL` of `NH_3` solution of molarity M contains `= (14 xx M xx 2(V - (V_1)/2))/(1000) g `
Hence, Percentage of `N = (14 xx M xx 2(V - (V_1)/(2)))/(1000) xx 100/m = (1.4 xx M xx 2(V - (V_1)/(2)))/(m) %`
