Nitrogen exists as diatomic molecule and phosphorous acts as tetra atomic molecule. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitrogen because of its small size and high electronegetivity forms p`pi` - p`pi` multiple bonds. Thus it exists as diatomic molecule having a triple bond between the two N-atoms. Phosphorous due to its larger size and lower electronegativity.
