Why nitrogen is less reactive?...

Why nitrogen is less reactive?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to the presence of triple bond between the two nitrogen atoms (N = N), its bond dissociation energy is very high. As a result it is inert and unreactive in nature. 174 Phosphorus exists as tetra atomic molecule. In this P-P single bond is presern which is weaker than N = N bond. Therefore, its bond dissociation energy is very low and more reactive than nitrogen
