why ammonia has higher boiling point than phosphine ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Boiling point of `NH_(3)` is higher than `PH_(3)` due to intermolecular H-bonding. Nitrogen is highly electronegative and hence H-bonding is possible. Due to low electronegativity of phosphorus, H-bonding is not possible in case of `PH_(3)`.
