Sulphur show +4 and +6 oxidation stae in their compounds but oxygen can not show these oxidation states.

The electronic configurations of oxygen and sulphur are as follows :
O (Z= 8) = `1s^(2) 2s^(2) 2p^(4)`
S (Z = 16) = `1s^(2) 2s^(2) 2p^(6) 3s^(2) 3p^(4) 3d^(0)` Sulphur has vacant d-orbitals in its valence shell. So, it can increase its co-ordination number and show oxidation state of +4 and +6. Vacant d-orbitals are absent b oxygen-atom. Hence, it cannot extend its valency.
