Explain why `H_2O` is a liquid but` H_2S` is a gas at room temperature.

Text Solution

Oxygen is more electronegative than sulphur. Intermolecular H-bonding occurs in `H_(2)O` and not in `H_(2)S`. Large number of `H_(2)O` molecules are associated and exist as liquid. In `H_(2)S`, neighbouring molecules are not associated. Hence, it exists as gas at room temperature.
