Which of the two `H_2O` or `H_2S` has higher boiling point ? Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atomic size of oxygen is less than that of sulphur. Oxygen is more electronegative than sulphur. Intermolecular H-bonding occurs in `H_(2)O`. Large number of molecules are associated in water through H-bonding. H- bonding does not occur in `H_(2)S`.

Large amount of energy is required to break the associated molecules. Hence, boiling point of `H_(2)O` is higher than `H_(2)S`.
