`SO_2` has acidic character. Explain.

It dissolves in water to form sulphurous acid. `SO_(2)(g) + H_(2)O(l) rarr H_(2)SO_(3)`(aq). So `SO_(2)` is regarded as anhydride of sulphurous acid. Its aqueous solution is acidic and turns blue litmus milky.
