Why does sulphur in vapour state exhibit paramagnetic character ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In vapour state sulphur partially exists as `S_(2)`. It has two unpaired electrons in the antibonding `pi` orbitals just like `O_(2)`. Hence, sulphur in vapour state exhibits paramagnetism.
