How would you account for the following ...

How would you account for the following : Sulphur has a great tendency for catenation than oxygen.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Sulphur has stronger S - S bonds as compared to O - O bonds. This is due to small size of oxygen. The lone pairs of electrons on the oxygen atoms repel the bond pairs of the O - O bond to a greater extent than the lone pairs of electrons on the sulphur atom.
