Explain the following :
Iodine is more soluble in KI solution than in water.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Iodine is non-polar in nature and water is polar in nature. Therefore iodine does not dissolve in water. Iodine easily combines with aqueous solution of Kl to form the soluble complex `Kl_(3)`. KI + `I_(2) rarr KI_(3)` or (`K^(+)I_(3)^(-)`). `KI_(3)` is ionic in nature. Thus, it is easily soluble in water.
