A jet airplane travelling at the speed of `500 km h^-1`' ejects its products of combustion at the speed of `1500 km h^-1`' relative to the jet plane. What is the speed of the latter with respect to an observer on the ground ?

Speed of jet airplane `v _(1) = 500 km h ^(-1)`
Felative speed of fuel ejection w.r.t. plane, `v _(2) = - 1500 km h ^(-1)` (downward speed is taken as - ve)
Let speed of fuel ejection w.r.t. obsever on the ground `= v _(2)`
Now as we know that `v _(r) = v _(2) - v _(1)`
`-1500 = v _(2) - 500 implies v _(2) =- 1000 km h ^(-1).`
`= 1000 km h ^(-1) ` downward
