Calculate the temperature at which the rms velocity of nitrogen molecules will be equal to `8 km s^-1` Molecular weight of nitrogen is 28.

Text Solution

We are given:
Molecular mass of hydrogen =28
Root mean square speed of molecule `=8 km s^-1 =8 times 10^3 ms^-1`
We are to calculate, temperature of nitrogen gas T
using relation `v_(rms)=sqrt((3RT)/M)` we have `T=(Mv_(rms)^2)/(3R)= (28 times 64 times 10^6)/(3 times 8.314)`
`T=(64 times 28 times 10^6)/(3 times 8.314) implies T=7.2 times 10^7 K`
So temperature of gas molecules, T is `7.2 times 10^7 K`
