The bob of a simple pendulum is a spherical hollow ball filled with water. A plugged hole near the bottom of the oscillating bob gets suddenly unplugged. During observation, till water is coming out, the time period of oscillation would

A

first increase and then decrease to the original value

B

first decrease and then increase to the original value

C

remain unchanged

D

increase towards a saturation value

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A

The bob filled completely with water has its centre of mass at its centre. The time period of oscillation is
`T= 2pi sqrt((l)/(g))`
As the water starts coming out of the bob, its centre of mass shifts vertically downwards as a result effective length of the pendulum increases and hence its period also increases. When the bob is empty, again its centre of mass appears at its centre and as a result, the period of oscillation again reaches to its original value.

The bob of a simple pendulum is a hollow cylinder, with a small hole in the bottom. It is filled with sand and set into oscillation. Its periodic time (T) is measured at regular intervals. As the sand starts coming out we find that

Assertion: The bob of a simple pendulum is a full of water if a fine hole is made at the bottom of the of the ball , then the time period will no more remain constant Reason : The time period of simple pendulum does not depend open mass

A hollow sphere is taken as bob of a simple pendulum. This hollow sphere is filled with fine sand. There is a small hole at the bottom of this sphere through which the fine sand leaks out. How does the time period of this simple pendulum alter? Discuss.

Assertion : The bob of a simple pendulum is a ball full of water, if a fine hole is made in the bottom of the ball, the time period first increases and then decreases. Reason : As water flows out of the bob the weight of bob decreases.

A metallic sphere is filled with water and hung by a long thread. It is made to oscillate. If there is a small hole in the bottom through which water slowly flows out, the time period will

The bob of a simple pendulum is displaced from its equilibrium position 'O' to a position 'Q' which is at a height 'h' above 'O' and the bob is then released. Assuming the mass of the bob to be 'm' and time period of oscillation to be 2.0s , the tension in the string when the bob passes through 'O' is
