How many moles of `Fe^(2+)` ions are formed when excess iron is treated with 500 mL of `0.4 N HCI` under inert atmosphere? Assume no change in volume

A

`0.4`

B

`0.1`

C

`0.2`

D

`0.8`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
b

`because` Reaction between Fe and HCl is as follows
`Fe+2HCltounderset((+2))(FeCl_(2))+H_(2)` on reaction
n(moles of Fe) =n (moles of HCl)
n(Fe)=Normality (HCl)`xx` Volume of HCl
n(Fe) `=(0.4xx500)/(1000)=0.2` moles
As each Fe consumers 2 electrons to changes to `Fe^(2+)` ion . `therefore` Number of `Fe^(2+)` ions produced `=(0.2)/(2)=0.1` mole
