Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Shape of `PCl_(5).` The phosphorus atom has five valence and five are contributed by five chlorine atoms.
Total no. of electron pairs in the valence shall of P atom `=(5+5)/(2)=5`
Shape of molecules = Trigonal bipyramidal

Shape of `BrF_(5).` The bromine atom has seven valence electrons and five are contributed by five flouorine atoms.
Total no. of electron pairs in the valence shell of Br atom `=(7+5)/(2)=6`
No. of shaped pairs = 5 , No of lone pairs = one
Shape of molecule = Distorted octahedral (or square pyramidal)
