Non-stoichiometric cuprous oxide. Cu(2)O...

Non-stoichiometric cuprous oxide. `Cu_(2)O` can be perpared in laboratory. In this oxide, copper-to-oxygen ratio is slightly less than 2 : 1. can you account for the fact that this substance is a p-type semiconductors?

The ratio less than `2:1` in `Cu_(2)O` shows that some cuprous `(Cu^(+))` ions have been replaced by cupric `(Cu^(2+))` ions. In order to maintain the electrical neutrality, every two `Cu^(+)` ions will be replaced by one `Cu^(2+)` ions which results in creating cation vacancies leading to positive holes. Since the conduction is due to positive holes, it is a p-type semiconductor.

Knowing the electron gain enthalpy values for O to O^(-) and OtoO^(2-) as -141 and 702 kJcdotmol^(-1) respectively, how can you account for the formation of a large number of oxides having O^(2-) species and not O^(-) ? (Hint: Consider lattice energy factor in the formation of compounds).

Let us consider 1 mol of gas. If It Is an ideal gas then (Poverset-V)/(RT) = 1 where , overset-V = molar volume of a gas For a non-ideal gas this quotient may not be equal to 1. It can also be less than or greater than 1. Therefore, the above quotient is defined as compressibility factor Z. Z = (Poverset-V)/(RT) = (Molar volume of real gas)/ (Molar volume of ideal gas) The compressibility factor of real gases can be written as Z = (Poverset-V)/(RT)=1+B/overset-V+C/overset-(v^2)+D/overset-(v^3)......(Viral equation) Where B,C,D are called virial coefficients and are dependent on the nature of the gas and temperature. B=(b-a/(RT)) .At Boyle’s temperature, second virial coefficient becomes zero. when Zgt1 repulsive forces are dominant and when Zlt1 the forces of attraction are dominant.
