Why is Frenkel defect not shown by alkali metal halides?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Frenkel defect arises when certain ions (particularly cations) leave their noumal sites and occupy positions in the interstitial space. The ions of the alkali metal halides are of large size and cannot be easily accommodated in the interstitial space. Therefore, the halides of alkali metals donot normally show Frenkel defect.
