Explain why low molecular mass alcohols are soluble in water ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Alcohols containing upto three carbon atoms are completely soluble in water on account of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The energy released helps is their miscibility. However ,as the size of the alkyl group increases, the polar nature of O-H bond decreases . This is responsible for the decreases in hydrongen bonding in their moelcules and as a reustl, alcohols become less soluble in water. For more details, consult section 7
