(a) Starting materal for the manufacture of phenol in both cumene and Rasching's processes in benzene, which is one of the products of coal tar distillation. Cholorbenzene is uded in Dow's process. For details, consult section. 13
(b) For answer, consult section 16
(c) In phenol as well as phenate ion, the ring is highly activate and it is in a position to bring about the polarisation of Br-Br atom . The electrophile `Br^(+)` ion can be readily made available. Therefore, no Lewis acid is requred in this case. For more details, consult section 16

Assertion (A) Like bromination of benzene, bromination of phenol is also carried out in the presence of Lewis acid. Reason (R) Lewis acid polarises the bromine molecule.

On reaction with aqueous bromine at room temperature phenol forms which of the following?

An organic compound (A) with molecular formula C_(8)H_(8)O forms an orange-red precipitate with 2,4-DNP reagent and gives yellow precipitate on heating with iodine in the presence of sodium hydroxide. It neither reduces Tollens or Fehlings reagent, nor does it decolourise bromine water or Baeyerâs reagent. On drastic oxidation with chromic acid, it gives a carboxylic acid (B) having molecular formula C_(7)H_(6)O_(2) . Identify the compounds (A) and (B) and explain the reactions involved.

Starting from phenol how would you obtain the following compounds ? (a) p-quinone, (b) picric acid and (c) Anisole.

Aryl chlorides and bromides can be easily prepared by electropilic substitution of arenes with chlorine and bromine respectively in the presence of Lewis acid catalysts. But why does preparation of aryl iodides requires presence of an oxidising agent?

Phenol and formaldehyde undergo condensation to give a polymer (A) which on heating with formaldehyde gives a thermosetting polymer (B). Name the polymers. Write the reactions involved in the formation of (A). What is the structural difference between two polymers?

A compound (A) (C_7H_4N) on hydrolysis with strong aqueous acid gives another compound (B) on treatment with ammonia gives a salt which on heating gives (C). The compound (C) undergoes Hofmann's bromamide reaction to yield aniline. Identify A, B, C and write chemcial reactions involved.
