The oxygen atom in an ether has two unshared electron pairs. It can easily take up a proton from conc. `H_(2)S_(4)` which is a very strong acid to from oxonium salt that is water soluble. But it cannot accept a proton from `H_(2)O` which is a very weak acid (rather neutral )
