Halogen acids readily combine with alken...

Halogen acids readily combine with alkenes to form addition products but fail to react with carbonyl compounds. Discuss

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Halogen acids (HX) react with alkenes to form haloalkenes but they fail to react with the carbonyl compounds. In fact, the attack does take place but the product is unstable and decomposes to form carbonyl compound along with halogen acid. Thus, the reaction becomes reversible.
