Formaldehyde gives Cannizzaro's reactio...

Formaldehyde gives Cannizzaro's reaction while acetaldehyde does not. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Formaldehyde does not have an `alpha`-hydrogen. It therefore, takes part in Cannizzaro's reaction when heated with strong `NaOH` to form a methyl alcohol and sodium formate mixture. Acetaldehyde fails to react since it has `alpha`-hydrogen atoms present.
