Name the reagent by which most aldehydes can be made to undergo Cannizzaro's type reaction. Give the relevant equation also.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Most of the aldehydes (with or without `alpha`-hydrogen atom) can be made to undego Cannizzaro's reaction with aluminium ethoxide i.e., `Al(OC_(2)H_(5))_(3)` to give a mixture of alcohol (by reduction) and acid (by oxidation). The acid and alcohol then combine to give ester. The reation is called Tischenko Reaction and is illustrated by acetaldehyde.
`underset("Acetaldehyde")(2CH_(3)CHO)overset(Al(OC_(2)H_(5))_(3))rarrunderset("Acetic acid")(CH_(3)COOH)+underset("Ethyl alcohol")(C_(2)H_(5)OH)overset(-H_(2)O)rarrunderset("Ethyl acetute")(CH_(3)COOC_(2)H_(5))`
