Find the decrease in the volume of a sample of water from the following data. Initial volume `=1000 cm^3` initial pressure `=10^5Nm^-2, ` final pressure `=10^6Nm^-2`, compressibility of water `=50xx10^-11m^2N^-1`.

The change in pressure
`=/_\P=10^6Nm^-2-10^5Nm^-2`
`Compressibility = 1/(Bulk modulus)=-(/_\V/V)/(/_\P)`
or `50xx10^-11xxm^2N^-1=-(/_\V)/((10^-3m^3)xx(9xx10^5Nm^-2))`
`or /_\V=-50xx10^-11xx10^-3xx9xx10^5m^3`
`=-4.5x10^-7m^3=0.45cm^3`
Thus, the decrease in volume is 0.45 cm^3.
