The steam point and the ice point of a m...

The steam point and the ice point of a mercury thermometer are marked as `80^@C` and `20^@C`. What will be the temperature in centigrade mercury scale when this thermometer reads `32^@C`?

Ice point `=20^0 (T_0)`, T_1 = 32^0 C`
steam point `=80^0 (T_(100))`
`T= (T_1 - T_0)/(T_100 - T_0) xx 100`
`= (32 - 20)/(80 - 20) xx 100`
`=12/60 xx 100 = 120/6 = 20^0 C`

On a new scale of temperature (which is linear) and caller the W scale , the freezing and boiling points of water are 39^@ W and 239^@ W respectively . What will be the temperature on the new scale , corresponding to a temperature of 39^@C on the celsius scale?

A platinum resistance thermometer is constructed which reads ,0^0 at ice point and 100^0 at steam point. Let t_p denote temperature on this scale and let t denote the temperature on a mercury on a mercury thermometer scale. The resistance of the platinum coil varies with t as R_1 = R_0 (1+alphat + betat^2) . Derive an expression for the resistance as a function of T_p .
