When we try to close a water tap with our fingers, fast jets of water gush through the openings between our fingers.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

This is due to the continuity equation of flow of the liquids. When we close the water tap, the area of cross-section decreases and according to the equation of continuity (aυ= constant), the velocity of flow of the liquid increases.

Reaction time : When a situation demands our immediate action, it takes some time before we really respond. Reaction time is the time a person takes to observe, think and act. For example, if a person is driving and suddenly a boy appears on the road, then the time elapsed before he slams the brakes of the car is the reaction time. Reaction time depends on complexity of the situation and on an individual. You can measure your reaction time by a simple experiment. Take a ruler and ask your friend to drop it vertically through the gap between your thumb and forefinger (Fig.). After you catch it, find the distance d travelled by the ruler. In a particular case, d was found to be 21.0 cm. Estimate reaction time.

The surface of water in a water tank on the top of a house is 4 m above the tap level. Find the pressure of water at the tap, when the tap is closed. Is it necessary to specify that the tap is closed? Take g=10ms^-2

Water leaks out from an open tank through a hole of area 2mm^2 in the bottom. Suppose water is filled up to a height of 80 cm and the area of cross section of the tankis 0.4 m^2 . The pressure at the open surface and the hole are equal to the atmospheric pressure. Neglect the small velocity of the water near the open surface in the tank. a. Find the initial speed of water coming out of the hole. b. Findteh speed of water coming out when half of water has leaked out. c. Find the volume of water leaked out during a time interval dt after the height remained is h. Thus find the decrease in height dh in term of h and dt. d. From the result of part c. find the time required for half of the water to leak out.

Gravitational waves: Waves are created on the surface of water when we drop a stone into it. Similarly you must have seen the waves generated on a string when both its ends are held in hand and it is shaken. Light is also a type of wave called the electromagnetic wave. Gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet rays, infrared rays, microwave and radio waves are all different types of electromagnetic waves. Astronomical objects emit these waves and we receive them using our instruments. All our knowledge about the universe has been obtained through these waves. Gravitational waves are a very different type of waves. They have been called the waves on the fabric of space-time. Insteine predicted their existence in 1916. These waves are very weak and it is very difficult to detect them. Scientists have constructed extremely sensitive instruments to detect the gravitational waves emitted by astronomical sources. Among these, LIGO (Laser Interferometrc Gravitational Wave Observatory) is the prominent one. Exactly after hundred years of their prediction, scientists detected these waves coming from an astronomical source. Indian scientist have contributed significantly in this discovery. This discovery has opened a new path to obtain information about the Universe. What are the different types of electro magnetic waves?

Why don't we hear sounds when our ears are closed?

While watering a distant plant, a gardener partially closes the exit hole of the pipe by putting his finger on it. Explain why this results in the water stream going to a larger distance.

A beaker is placed on the top of a coin. The top of the beaker is closed with an opaque body with a small hole. View the coin from an angle , slowly add water through the hole while continuing to view the coin from the same angle. Repeat the procedure using cooking oil. a. What happens when water is continuously added ? b. What about the heights of water and oil, when con completely disappears ? c. In which liquid, the coin is concealed best with minimum height? Why? d. What is the valation between opitieal angle and refrective index. ?
