Equal weights of methane and oxygen are ...

Equal weights of methane and oxygen are mixed in a vessel. The partial pressure of oxygen is

A

`1//3`

B

`2//3`

C

`(1)/(2)`

D

`(1)/(2) xx (273)/(298)`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A

Molecular weight of methane
`(CH_(4)) = 12 + 4 =16 `
Molecular weight of oxygen `(O_(2))`= 32
Let the weight of methane
= weight of `O_(2)` = M g
Number of moles of methane = M/32
Number of moles of `O_(2) = (M)/(32)`
Total number of moles `= (M)/(16)+ (M)/(32) = (3M)/(32)`
Hence partial pressure of `O_(2)`
`((M)/(32))/((3m)/32)xx p = (1)/(3) xx p`
