Can Fe^(3+) oxidises bromide to bromine ...

Can `Fe^(3+)` oxidises bromide to bromine under standard conditions ?
Given: `E_(Fe^(3+)//Fe^(2+))^(0) = 0.771 , E_(Br_(2)//Br)^(0) = 1.09 V`

Text Solution

Required half cell reaction
`2Br^(-) to Br_(2) + 2e^(-) (E_("ox")^(0)) = - 1.09 V`
`2Fe^(3+) + 2e^(-) to 2Fe^(2+) " " (E_("red")^(0)) = 0.771 V`
`2Fe^(3+) + 2Br^(-) to 2Fe^(2+) + Br_(2) (E_("cell")^(0)) = ?`
`E_("cell")^(0) = (E_("ox")^(0)) + (E_("red")^(0))`
` = - 1.09 + 0.771`
` = - 0.319 V`
`(E_("cell")^(0))` is negative , `DeltaG` is positive and the cell reaction is non spontaneous. Hence `Fe^(3+)` cannot oxidises `Br^(-)" to " Br_(2)`.
