Sixteen cells each of emf 3 V are connected in series and kept in a box: External the combination shows an emf of 12 V.
Calculate the number of cells reversed in the connection.

Number of cell x = 16
emf of each cell E = 3 V
`:." Total emf = nE"`
` = 16 xx 3 = 48 V`
Let the number of cell in reversed direction be n
Total emf - 2nE = Effective emf
` 48 - 2n xx 3 = 12 V`
`- 6 n = 12 - 48 = -36`
Number of cells `:." n" = (-36)/(-6) = 6`
Number of cells reversed in the connection is n = 6.
