(i) The bacterium rhizobium is found in the root nodules of leguminous plants.
(ii) It lives in symbiotic association with these plants and fixes the atmospheric nitrogen as nitrate in the soil.
(iii) This increases soil fertility which is the reason why farmers, plant leguminous crops in rotation with grass crops such as paddy or wheat which are unable to take atmospheric nitrogen.
