The following are the functions of tapetum : (i) Tapetum supplies nutrition to the developing microspore. (ii) It plays an important role in pollen wall formation through the production of ubisch bodies. (iii) Tapetal cells contribute pollenkitt material and is later transferred to the pollen surface. (iv) Exine proteins responsible for rejection reaction of the stigma are derived from tapetal cells.
