Most widely practiced and culturally accepted TSM in Tamil Nadu is siddha system of medicine, which is based on the text written by 18 siddhars. They are not only from Tamil Nadu but also from other countries. The knowledge in this system of medicine is documented in the form of poems in Tamil. Panchabuta philosophy is the base for siddha medicine and vitam, pottam, kapam are three humors, that are responsible for the health of human beings. Any disturbance in the equilibrium of these humors result in ill health.
The drug sources include plants, animals parts, marine products and minerals. The drugs with long life is prepared using minerals and more than 800 herbs are used in this system of medicine.
