It is established that RNA is the first genetic material. Justify by giving reasons.

Explanation

The reasons to establish that RNA is the first genetic material , are as follows.
(i) A typical cell contians 10 times more RNA than DNA , indicating their variety of roles played by RNA in a cell.
(ii) Fraenkel-Conrat and Singer in 1957 first demonstrated that RNA is the genetic material in TMV (Tobacco Mosaic Virus)
(iii) Leslie Orgel, Francis Brick and Carlwoese independently proposed .RNA World. as the first stage in the evloution of life.
(iv) At this stage RNA catalysed all molecules necessary for survival and replication.
(v) Walter Gilbert (1986) used the term RNA world for the first time and declared that RNA is the first genetic material on earth.
(vi) Now enough evidences are available to suggest essential life processes such as metabolism , translation , splicing etc are carried out by RNA.
(vi) RNA has the capacity to act as both as genetic material and catalyst.
