Explain negative control of transcription initiation.

(i) The repressor protein binds to the operator of the operon , preventing RNA polymerase from transcribing the operon.
(ii) When an inducer such as lactose is present, the repressor protein is inactivated by the interaction with inducer.
(iii) This allows RNA polymerase to bind to the promoter site and transcribe the operon to produce lac mRNA.
(iv) This enables the formation of all required enzymes for lactate metabolism.
