Industrial melanism is an example of natural selection exhibited by the peppered moth, Biston betularia .Black and white peppered moth are available in England. before industrialization. moths escaped from predators, because of white colour in the walls of building. But after industrialization. the smoke and soot let out from industries make the tree trunks bark, on which the black moths camoflaged and white moths were easily identified by the predators. Hence the population of black coloured was increased, when compared to the white coloured moth, indicating the positive selection pressure on black coloured moth by nature, This shows that in a population. the organisms that can adapt to the environment will survive and increase in population through natural selection.
This phenomenon is called Industrial melanism .
