Adaptive radiation is the evolutionary process, which produces new species diverged from a single ancestral form, which becomes adapted to newly invaded habitats .
The example of adaptive radiation include Darwin.s finches and marsupials in Australian.
In Darwin.s finches, s common ancestor arrived on Galapagos about 2 million years ago. During that time, 14 recognized species have evolved withdifference in body shape, beak shape and feeding behaviour. In order to utilize different food resoureces such as insects, seeds, nectar from cactus flowers and blood from iguans, changes in size and form of beak have evolved in organisms through natural selection. The variation in beak shape is associated with variation in gene ALXI in the DNA of Darwin.s finches. The phenotypic changes in the shape of the beak of Darwin.s finches is due is mild mutation in ALXI gene.
Marsupials in Australia and placental mammals in North America are two subclasses of mammals. They have adapted to similar way of life regarding food habits, locomotory skill or climate. More than 100 million years ago they were separated from a common ancestor .Both mammals have developed variety of species living in similar habital with similar way if life despite tempered and geographical separation. It is evident that their resemblance in shape, iocomotary mode, feeding and foraging are superimposed upon different modes of reproduction. This reflects their distinctive evolutionary relationships. More than 200 species of marsupials present in Australia have undergone adaptive radiation to occupy the diverse habitats in Australia.
