Population regulation is the process by which the number in population of an organism is regulated by environmental resistance. The inherent tendency of all animal population is to increase in number. But this may not happen idenfinitely. When the optimum carrying capacity of the environment is reached the population number remain static or fluctuate depending on environmental conditions. Many factors regulate this and they are grouped under two categories namely extrinsic factors - density independent and intrinsic factors - density dependent. Availability of living space, shelter, weather, food etc form extrinsic factors. Competition, predation, emigration, immigration and diseases are included under intrinsic factors.
