Protected areas: Protected areas are biogeographical areas, where biological diversity along with natural and cultural resources are protected, maintained and managed through legal measures. Animal parks, wild life sancturies, community reserves and biosphere reserves are incl~ded under protected areas. World wide about 37,000 protected areas were recognized by world conservation monitoring centre. India has 771 protected areas which include. National parks (104), Wtld life sancturies (544), biosphere reserve (18) and several sacred groves.
